Hunting for Retro and Vintage Gifts in London - by Alice Davises

If there's one thing that I adore about London is the city's endless treasure collection of vintage and retro treasures. London is the perfect place to find a unique gift for an occasion or a nostalgic present for Christmas, or anything more meaningful than a standard high-end set.

Vintage markets are one of my favourite weekend rituals. Portobello Road is always at the top of my list not just because of its vibrant chaos, but for the huge variety. You can find everything from mid-century homeware to enamel kitchen tins and old-fashioned vinyl records that are alive. I've lost track of the number of times I've left with "just one small present" and it turned into a bag stuffed with treasures.

For something that is more refined, I usually go to Shoreditch and Islington. These areas are home to boutique vintage stores that specialize in specific eras. For instance, there's a lighting store from the 1970s here, a shop dedicated to 1940s fashion there. It's the kind of shopping experience where you'll end up talking to the proprietor of the shop for half an hour about the story of a lamp's history or the origins of a leather satchel.

Of course, a large part of the fun is mixing the traditional with the new. I often mix a vintage home decor with contemporary packaging or fresh flowers to give it an updated look. It's a wonderful way make something old and exciting and still respect its history.

London offers a variety of fairs that are seasonal. They are particularly popular around Christmas. The Southbank Winter Market and various pop-up vintage fairs blend the excitement of the season with stalls that are full of unique, unique gifts. I never leave empty handed, and I often leave with a present for myself.

In a world full of disposable goods, giving a retro or vintage gift feels personal and thoughtful.
